Institutional research

Institution:

The definition of an institution in terms of media is an organisation that is responsible for media text. In terms of film, this can include companies such as 20th Century Fox or New Line Cinema, which are involved in the production and/or distribution of the film.

Above are example logos from film production companies and institutions. These are usually featured before the film actually starts, and most are recognisable, e.g. Walt Disney Picture, especially if they are part of the Big 6.
Institutions are an important part of the film industry, producing new films and ideas to be put on screen for an audience.

Examples:

An example film is the conjuring, in which before the film starts both the Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema logos are presented to the audience. This is commonly found in films before the film starts, to give credit to the companies for the work that they have been involved in with the making of the film.
Like with The Conjuring, two or more logos are featured at the beginning of the film, as most films, especially independent films, are part of a co-production deal, in which at least two companies are credited.

This example above includes the logos of the company being features, with an eerie background, animation and music style to match the theme of horror. This is common with the company Warner Bros. Pictures, as it can also be seen with films such as Harry Potter; in which the font is changes to look like the lightening scar that the character of Harry has, as well as the theme song and dark clouds being featured in the background.

After this is shown, the clip cuts to the first scene of the film, which doesn't include titles, as the purpose of the scene it to create this mysterious and creepy atmosphere right from the beginning with a scene not related to the film, before introducing the titles along with the film in the next scene.
This feature is found in other films such as The Ghostbusters however the titles are not featured in the next scene, but after the institution logo is the first scene with no titles, which grips the audience with its content rather than establishing shots. The way in which this is done is quite common among films, as they make use of the first scene to generate interest from the audience before incorporating titles from institutions and other credits.

However, what is also founds with other films is that once these logos are featured, there is a title sequence in which these institutional companies are mentioned again. This time, the logos aren't featured, but a title which includes text such as " A New Line Cinema Production" or "20th Century Fox Presents".
